Circuits, Pebbling and Expressibility

چکیده
We give characterizations of nondeterministic complexity classes such as NP and PSPACE and the classes in the polynomial time hierarchy in the two-person pebble game model [VT89]. These characterizations motivate the definitions of these classes using firstorder sentences extending the results in [Im82]. It is shown that the role-switches resource in the pebble games closely model the levels of the polynomial hierarchy. These characterizations are made possible by explicitly considering circuit-size in the pebbling characterizations and the size of the underlying universe in the first-order characterizations.

The Synthesis and Analysis of Stochastic Switching Circuits
Stochastic switching circuits are relay circuits that consist of stochastic switches called pswitches. The study of stochastic switching circuits has widespread applications in many fields of computer science, neuroscience, and biochemistry. In this paper, we discuss several properties of stochastic switching circuits, including robustness, expressibility, and probability approximation. First, ...
متن کاملOptimal pebbling in products of graphs
We prove a generalization of Graham’s Conjecture for optimal pebbling with arbitrary sets of target distributions. We provide bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of products of complete graphs and explicitly find optimal t-pebbling numbers for specific such products. We obtain bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of powers of the cycle C5. Finally, we present explicit distributions which provide a...
متن کاملA Graph Pebbling Algorithm on Weighted Graphs
A pebbling move on a weighted graph removes some pebbles at a vertex and adds one pebble at an adjacent vertex. The number of pebbles removed is the weight of the edge connecting the vertices. A vertex is reachable from a pebble distribution if it is possible to move a pebble to that vertex using pebbling moves. The pebbling number of a weighted graph is the smallest number m needed to guarante...
متن کاملApproximating Holant problems by winding
We give an FPRAS for Holant problems with parity constraints and not-all-equal constraints, a generalisation of the problem of counting sink-free-orientations. The approach combines a sampler for near-assignments of “windable” functions – using the cycle-unwinding canonical paths technique of Jerrum and Sinclair – with a bound on the weight of nearassignments. The proof generalises to a larger ...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Pebbling and Cover Pebbling
This paper discusses the complexity of graph pebbling, dealing with both traditional pebbling and the recently introduced game of cover pebbling. Determining whether a configuration is solvable according to either the traditional definition or the cover pebbling definition is shown to be NP -complete. The problem of determining the cover pebbling number for an arbitrary demand configuration is ...
